I like this article as it spells out the whole process in a simple and logical way. I've often read stuff on going all-grain that makes it seem complicated, but I suspect that there can sometimes be a bit of "snobbishness" coming from some sources which can annoy me (after all, I like using DME <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->).

I would point out though that from the boil onwards the methodology in Séan's KB item applies equally to all-grain, partial mash, extract and kit brewing, so it's a nice step-by-step for anyone getting into brewing.

Have to add i read this and after i sent Sean a pm to thank him for such an easy article to understand for a novice like myself. Keep up the good work, this forum is a prime example of what a forum should be, imo friendly, full of easy to understand information and last but not least IRISH! No only joking our friends over at Jims are doing a great job 2. The site is a credit to people involved and will help more than any other factor to increase the size of the home brew community in this country and in turn the quality of the products available to us,

I'm just after reading this article now as I'm planning to do an all grain or mini mash brew as my next brew or maybe the one after that <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> I see that its been almost a year old since you wrote it Séan, is there anything you would do differently now?

I think I covered it fairly well. I might emphasise the importance of preheating the mash tun more than I did and recommend using up to 10 litres of boiling water to do the job, but that's about it.

I printed off the article, and my recipe (pretty similar to the example) and used it as a step-by-step guide for my first AG. It worked well for me. There's always little tweaks you can work on, but as a basic run through it is a good guide.
