St. Bernardus Apt 12 18 years 11 months ago #1

Hopefully along with Goose Island IPA and Achel we may be getting in St Bernardus Apt 12 this week to McHughs. This was previously considered a Trappist beer until 1992 when the Trappist Monasteries decided that the qualification ‘Trappistenbier’ could only be given to beers brewed inside the walls of the Trappist Monastery.

This I can't wait to try as it was brewed with the help of the Masterbrewer of Westvleteren, who brought along his wisdom, knowledge and the original recipes.
I haven't been lucky enough to try a Westvleteren yet but i think this is going to come close!

Haven't seen this before in Ireland but it may already be available. Still pretty excited though!

St Bernardus 12 is a great beer, if you can see if you can get st feuillien it was rate by CAMRA as one of the best beer in Belgian as per the good beer guide to Belgian. It nearly out paced all of the Trappist’s except Westvleteren 12

Hi HappyAcid, I haven't been fortunate enough to have a Westvleteren either, they're very rare. The monks only supply a few crates each to folk who come to the monastery in a drive-thru type operation. You give them a call and find out what the next batch is and also when it is available for purchase. You register you're name and vehicle reg. On the day, you arrive and are given your allotment though a hatch, I think its a 3 crate maximum now. People queue for hours supposedly when news that the 12 is available (St. Bernardus Abt 12 equivalent)If all the crates are sold then you leave empty handed!! Harsh!

The only other official supplier of this beer is in the monastery-affiliated bar across the road where you can buy the 3 available versions in 6 packs at an inflated cost.

Additional Note:
Westvleteren 12 was voted 'Best Beer in the World 2006' by RateBeer.com. St. Bernardus is a truely great beer....I'd love to make a comparison!

Redmonds in Ranelagh had a supply of St. Bernardus some time ago but I haven't seen it in the last few months. So you're from McHughs Malahide Road? I'll be seeing you soon.....

Hey Ichiban. Just to say that I believe the system at Westvleteren has improved, at least with regard to queueing. If you manage to get through on their phone line (press 3 for English), you are given a date and time slot to turn up at the abbey. If you want a good laugh; check this out to see how this American beer lover made his pilgrimage!

You can be lucky and drink the occasional Westvleteren in some bars in Netherlands and Belgium. I have had the 8 in Brugge, and wondered what all the fuss was about. I think the mystical nature of this abbey and its produce is a great marketing tool! They do say that the 12 is fantastic, but I havan't had it...yet!
Anyway; St Bernardus Abt 12 is another great beer. Save some for me.

I was in Redmonds yesterday and saw these excellent beers back in stock again. They have the 33cl bottles of St. Bernardus Abt 12, 8, 6, Wit, and Tripel.

I bought all the 12s and 8s they had on the shelves, sorry folks. I'm sure they'll restock.

I had a Westvleteren 6 & 8 in the Bauhaus Hostel bar in Brugge. Also just off the Belfry Square theres a really good off licence that sold me 4 bottles of the 8 and 2 of the 12. I have about a dozen bottles or so at home <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> .

Which McHughs will this be available from and from when?
