No, apparently if you are going to post an Article and mark it as a Feature, you need to provide a banner for the top of the screen. I changed the type to General.

It's more to do with the template module for the banner on the front page. It accepts one or more categories, and we made "features" the one, meaning it'll try to stick anything from that category into the scrolly thing, but of course, then an appropriately-sized image is needed. But anything can go on the front page.
