(Sorry, I thought I had replied to Beernut's post earlier but it didn't appear for some reason)

Basically agreeing with Rory's point - I think we're at opposite ends of the brewing spectrum at the moment. I don't suppose I'll always think this way, but I reckon that following a set extract + steeping grains + hops recipe would be a good learning experience. You'd know that in theory the beer should turn out tasty and to a particular style, so any mistakes would be down to technique and not formulation.

Having said that, I completely get where Beernut (and others) are coming from!

Sorry Beernut, from your level of knowledge and all the much appreciated assistance you give on here and over at boards I assumed you were just one step down from opening your own brewery!

What I meant is that beginners like SOS_OPA and myself would be very attracted to something like this which is a kind of a step between basic kit and extract brewing.

Homebrewwest, perhaps a [b:3lvlhwuq]small[/b:3lvlhwuq] bag of steeping/speciality grains and hops added on to a kit for an additional €3 perhaps? I'd certainly be very attracted to that.

I aplaud any iniative that moves begining home brewers on from the absolute basic starting point of a kit and a kilo of sugar.

So the progression could be:

1. Kit plus DME or LME

1a. As 1 plus extra hops + speciality yeast

2. Kit ( or DME/LME ) plus steeping grains + Hops + Yeast

3. All grain kit: grains, adjuncts, hops, yeast

4. Bulk buying everything and designing your own beers

Agreed. And from a marketing point of view they could be labled on a graduating scale like:

Communion (Basic Kit + DME)
Confirmation (Kit, DME + Yeast)
Junior Cert (Confirmation + Steeping Grains)
Leaving Cert (Extract Brewing)
BBS (Bachelors in Brewing Science!)All Grain

That'll be EUR50 made payble to Rory's Best Marketing plc but will settle for cash or grains
