Wanted: Large Brown Flip Top Bottles 17 years 2 months ago #1

Anyone know of some good places to get large brown glass flip top bottles?

-The larger the better..

Did I hear correctly that someone said 1 Liter (Clear glass) flip top bottles are available at the Ikea in Belfast? -How much?

Even if you only know where to find clear or green glass, that's ok too as long as they're at least 500ml; but brown glass is even better.

I just love the insanely abundant CASES of 500ml brown glass flip top bottles in Germany; if I could find a case of these I'd be a happy man..

Does anyone know what sort of pressure flip top bottles can withstand?

-My next batch is a Weizen and I'm targeting 4.0 Volumes of CO2, which is pretty much middle of the target for the style. -This is going to be slightly over 8 oz of priming sugar for a 19L batch at around 18 degrees C; it's some pretty sizable pressures, so I'm a little concerned about the bottle's ability to withstand this pressure.

Actually if anyone knows where to get 750ML brown champagne bottles, I'd be ok with that option vs. flip tops.

Thanks,
Adam

I found brown 750ml flip top bottles on Brouwland... not exactly cheap, but seem exceptionally sturdy and up to the job.

Silenus (Geoff) in the Bull and Castle may be able to help as he sometimes saves the swing-top bottles for himself or other ICBers.

As long as it has had beer in it they're ok pressure wise. You could also consider getting a tabletop crown capper so you could use any beer bottle. Myself and a mate got a few from Brouwland a couple of years ago, but we reckoned it wasn't worth it as we could get the same bottles (500ml mind) by drinking lots of Flensburger

And you're dead right about how easy it is to assemble a collection in Germany. I currently have 9 crates, each holding 20 bottles, for homebrew use. A 50:50 mix of swing-top and normal I reckon. When you can buy beer cheaply by the crate it's easy to collect a few

You might just try and pick up some of the O'Hara's Celebration stout. They are in large swingtops. I'm pretty sure they are dwindling in numbers though and only a small few stores are still stocking them

The O Hara's bottles are super. Also Aldi and Lidl do occasional specials in big swing tops. I picked around 20 brown 660ml swing top bottles last time.
