There won't be enough people making the obvious sensible points, because journos don't want to hear them. Ultimately, I can't see it helping the cause of decent beer.

Radio Kerry mailed us hoping we would be outraged and could give them a solid rant

Nope, sorry.

But it definitely is quite skillful to brew that particular beer.

Aww man. Listener e-mails in that there used to be this beer called "barley wine" which was very strong, and people who drank it knew it was very strong. I get hopeful that we're about to get an observation about Ireland's lost ability to handle the strong stuff.

Glad you liked to interview. It seemed to go well from where I was sitting anyway.

They were definitely looking for someone to be outraged by this. When I was talking to the researcher yesterday she was actually surprised when I defend brewdog. She thought I was just going to jump on the "less of that now!" band wagon and try to add that we're not all that bad.

The outrage is actually all part of the same alcohol culture as binge drinking. The only reason people would be bothered by the concept of a high alcohol beer is if they see beer as nothing more than a means to an end. If pints of the stuff to get drunk is your only experience of beer then this would seem like a very bad idea indeed, but it requires a very narrow and unhealthy attitude to alcohol.

People with a healthy attitude to alcohol would not see this as a problem, because they drink a sensible amount of alcohol, regardless of how strong the beverage is.

did nobody spot the elephant in the room?

now i'm no mathmetician but could it be that a bottle of wine available for a third of the price might have more units than the actual 330ml bottle? no,silly me, i didn't think so. Boo down with this sort of thing
