What are pallets made from? I have a bunch of them left over from garden stuff delivered last year. Some might be pine but some of them certainly look like a hardwood.

I was cutting up the staves recently and i noticed that the big curly bits, that you get when you use a drill , reeked of vanilla and whiskey.

So i was thinking that seeing as i only heard of oak cubes for home brewing, would these curly bits work as well ??

That's what the pros use, isn't it? Oak spirals?

Yes a lot of pallets are made from sub standard hardwood offcuts, that is curly, burly or split or otherwise flawed bits. Hard to tell what wood though. Also I would be very surprised if pallets weren't soaked or sprayed or otherwise treated with some preservative, so I'd steer clear of them. If you can find a sawmill anywhere they'll give you irregular offcuts, they usually have huge piles of them and you can take your pick of oak or beech or whatever. that's what I used to do when I was a kid and I had a woodwork project on my brain.

Hmm, and you could use some of those beech offcuts to beechwood age your beer <!-- s;) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;) -->

[size=75:1vktozuf]Actually, there's a German beer, Duckstein, which does this, and it tastes a lot better than the more popular beechwood aged beer.[/size:1vktozuf]

No go for pallets then.
