ICB Munster Meet 17.1.2009
We had a very good ICB Munster meet yesterday evening despite the horrible weather conditions. Nice turn-out, Rebel, BITR, his buddy Morgan (about to join!!!), Oconn, his buddy Sean (also to join!), Taf (have a funny feeling you will be coming again!) and myself.
Thanks to Dave for hosting us as always – ICB will be getting a bill shortly for the one glass I broke but I am sure the coffers will be deep enough to pay for same!
We sampled the following –
Ger’s First Porter which got very favourable comments. Most of my First Amber Ale disappeared in froth once bottles were opened but the bit that was left was also sampled. Too much sugar I guess. All part of the learning curve.
Oconn brought also a bottle of stout and three different ales for sampling – all which were most pleasant. One had Pacific Gen New Zealand Hops uub it – our horizons are broadening!!!
BITR brought two brews to the meet – two lighter ales, named IDN and IDNE (I don’t know and I don’t know either!)). These were in contrast to Oconn’s darker ales and all went down well.
All home brews presented were well received so guys must be doing something right!!!
We followed our tasting of home brews with different brews from the Bierhaus menu, Phuca was a popular choice and we had much swapping / sipping of each other’s beers including such beers as Rodenbach Grand Cru, Ayinger Celebrator, Broughton’s 80/- Scottish ale, Utenos Porteris amongst many others. Unfortunately rebel and Oconn were on driving duty so could not partake fully.
We loosely agreed to try to meet approximate once a quarter, our next get together will most likely be the Easterfest at the Franciscan and in the summer we may well yet get to the Harbour Bar in Kinsale!!!! We also discussed the proposed Homebrew Expo and this will be followed up by BITR in a separate thread.
At the end of our homebrew tasting while ordering drinks at the Bar I came in conservation with Andy and Robin who where over from London for the week-end. Andy is a homebrewer and a member of CAMRA and they took up my invitation to join us. Suffice to say much more beer / brewing talk followed as well as on-going sampling. We left the Bierhaus about 930 and popped into the Off-licence in the Abbot Alehouse before going to the Bar upstairs. More great beers were had including Kwak on draught which is the guest draught at the moment at the Abbot.
Andy will also be joining the website and posting some recipes also.
All in all a more pleasant and interesting evening. Again as I wrote previously none of us would most likely never have met if not for the ICB site. Here’s to our next meet and in the meantime hopefully as many members a possible will support the Bierhaus, Franciscan Well and Abbot Alehouse, the three best bars for beer choice in Cork by far
