ICB MEET Thursday 17.7.08
At our Meet last Thursday we were thin in numbers but tasting done with Rebel and Ger. with Barry (Bierhaus super barman) and Donough, another beer geek like ourselves popping in and out of the tastings.
We did the following sampling –
Svytury’s Baltas wheatbeer on draught – This has been on in the Bierhaus for the past month or so. A very refreshing easy to drink wheatbeer, served with a slice of lemon is particularly nice. A most pleasant summer session beer. Served in appropriate glassware of course
Rebel’s Home brew Extract Stout and Fuggles Ale – All present were most impressed with the stout. It was really pleasant to drink and would rate as 7/10 on any rankings. One would happily pay for it as a commercial beer. Well done Rebel. Rebel brought the Fuggles in error. We had sampled this earlier in the year (Feb/March) and myself and Rebel concurred that it has definitely mellowed a lot in the meantime. Barry and Donough also said it tasted pretty good though the colour was a little off it did taste pretty good . It is reassuring that some home brews improve with time.
Broughton’s Old Jock Scottish Ale and Ayinger Weizenbock – Donough was drinking the Old Jock and sang its praises and Rebel had sampled a bottle previously with Dave so even though our focus was primarily on wheat beers we strayedo a bit of course to sample this along with the Ayinger Weizenbock. The Old Jock got high praise all round. A heavy big hitter at 6,.1% - more of a winter drink ideally we felt but one which will be sampled by the scribe again! The Weizenbock is over 7% alcohol but one would not necessarily think so on tasting it.
Weihenstephaner Dunkel and Vitus – The Dunkel tasted very good but was quite bright in colour. It was only today I realised it was most likely a Weisbier Dunkel as WS do this as well as a traditional dunkel. Both were commented on as really decent beers. It is great to have a choice of such superb wheatbeers in a bar in Ireland at this time.
Augustiner Edelstoff and Maredsous 8 – Two contrasting choices – The former is a decent Mnnchen lager and lovely to drink whilst the Maredsous 8 is a heavy somewhat stout-like flavour abbey beer. Again a beer to savour over a long winter night!
Overall we had a most enjoyable evening with excellent service from Barry. We probably sampled only half of the wheatbeers in stock at present in the Bierhaus but we sure did enjoy what we did sample! Unfortunately Dave was unable to join us on the night . We do however very much appreciate Dave’s generosity on the night and will no doubt have many more pleasant tasting in this great establishment.
