Recommendations for Dusseldorf & St. John's, Newfoundland? 14 years 8 months ago #1

Anyone have any recommendations for brewery or beer recommendations in either Dusseldorf, Germany or St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada?

I'm heading to the greater Munster, Cologne, Dusseldorf area on Sunday for a week; I've got a pretty good list from Barry but I'm looking for other opinions. (I visited most of the Kolsch breweries in Cologne last time so I'm focusing on Dusseldorf's Alts and hopefully a "Sticke" or two this time.)

At the end of October then I'm heading to St. John's, Newfoundland; I only have one recommendation for St. John's so far. They brew beer with melt water from icebergs! <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.quidividibrewery.ca/">www.quidividibrewery.ca/
(A slightly unreliable Canadian friend said that Newfoundland also had a tradition of an "IPA-like" highly hopped, strong beer that was exported to Russia and the Baltic states.)

IM everso HO, Uerige is the only Düsseldorf Alt brewpub worth spending time in.

And much as I love Kölsch, were I in Cologne I'd probably be spending more time in Biermuseum than a Kölsch house.

Newfoundland is a fantastic place to visit and even St John's is quite atmospheric.

However, both the food and beer were pretty lousy the two times I visited it a couple of years back. Beer consisted of Labatts etc., old local brand names that had been bought out years ago by the big boys and tasted it, and two micros called Storm Brewing (some of whose beers tasted quite nasty) and Quidi Vidi whose sweetish/malty 1892 seemed better than the rest at the time.

I do remember Propeller beers from Halifax in Nova Scotia as being pretty good - as was their non-alcoholic but seriously fiery ginger beer - so if you can get that I would recommend Otherwise you could always drink Screech the local rum.

Having said all that I think Newfoundland is one of the most memorable places I've visited and I hope to go back there in the future, just not for the beer.

I checked there first but I was looking for something updated more recently than 2003.

Ron's always got great content, I just never know how accurate the old europeanbeerguide pages are based upon the content creation dates.
