The unnatural alernative is Nylon which I used as a hop bag before I went all-grain. I was worried that 1.5 hours of boiling would melt the nylon or something and spoil my beer but 2 months on and the beer is fine.

I was just worried that nylon may reduce the mash efficiency because it's a tighter mesh. But feic it i'm probably overthinking the problem. This is low tech brewing after all!

CJ, is Hickey's the place across from the R.S.C., next to the electrical shop? If it is I've bought muslin in there before. There's a place in Dungarvan that I usually get it from too, if you're ever down this way.

Muslin is just a cotton cloth without such a tight weave and a good degree of strength.

Wow Sean, you're really tempting me to give all grain a try MUCH sooner than I had planned on doing it.

I had no idea it could be done this easily and using equipment that I already have. Frequenting some of the US beer forums has tainted my mind; I just assumed I need all sorts of expensive SS containers, pumps, and though I would have to do multiple infusions/decoction craziness and pretty much have a PHD to figure out the water chemistry.

I'm probably going to stick with extract for a few more months at least, but I can almost guarantee that this is the article and process I'm going to come back to to try my first AG.

Are there any particular styles that are more suited to this type of brewing? any styles that shouldn't be attempted using this system? -Are high gravity beers "out" because of the decrease in efficiency as the amount of grain goes up?

Just knowing that I can use my "extract equipment" to at least try all grain is very exciting...
