Drank Superbock in Portugal years ago. Horrendous stuff. Ended up drinking vodka mainly instead, though that was in Lisbon + Porto.

There is a place for good beer. My wife was there last year with her friend and sent me back pictures of a bar with a huge beer menu ranging from the slightly less commercial lagers, through the likes of Chimay/Duvel, St Bernardus and some US stuff like Sierra Nevada. Unfortunately I don't have the pics but she tells me it was parallel to the main bar street. If I can dig up anything else I'll let you know.

Sounds like the Superbock isn't so great then!
Not really mad about Port (although might be nice there!), but I've never heard of white port; will keep an eye out for it. Will try some of the local wines too. And is Madeiran wine common there??
A glimmer of hope from FranJ on the beer front...

If you are trying cocktails, maybe try a Caipirinha. It's a brazilian drink made from a sugar cane spirit called cachaça, brown sugar, limes and crushed ice. It's very citric and boozy one that you will probably either love or hate. There's no real mixer in it, just the ice melting, so fairly dangerous if you drink too many too fast! I got married in Portugal, a couple of years ago, so got a real taste for them then. Going back at the end of next month, so will be on them again! Can't really reccomend beer, as was just drinking whatever was available. Not a big fan of port either. I seem to have a good few bottles of Madeira wine at home after buying some myself and getting others as presents, but only use it in cooking, as not a fan of it.

There's a decent shop in Alvor on the "main" street that runs directly up the hill from the harbour. It's on the right as you walk up the hill and has a reasonable (for the Algarve) range of beers and wines/spirits. There are some slightly different (though still macro) beers including Sagres Preta (a dark beer 4.1%), Sagres Bohemia (6.7% cerveja especial) and a few others. These are beers that you won't see in the supermarket over there.

I'm against the tide here, but I confess to enjoying a cool bottle of Super Bock or Sagres in the sun. Sure, it's not craft beer but you can't have everything!

Oh, and there was a Belgian pub in Armacao da Pera (been there for years).
