Irish Times article: Pubs need to "change approach" 14 years 2 months ago #1

For Beoir members, this will be an example of "stating the bleedin' obvious", but nice to see unimaginative pub owners get some advice on how to avoid extinction from John Mc Kenna, editor of the Bridgestone Guides.

[i:dnc0f0r7]He said there was no recession where good food was concerned and people were eating their way through the recession.

“Matching restaurant food with Irish craft ales and beers is the big trend for 2012 and, as the bigger breweries stumble, craft brewers thrive,” he said. “Pubs that don’t recognise this and adapt are doomed, in my opinion.”

He said there was no doubt that pubs that served the same drinks as every other establishment and refused to offer something different and exciting would not survive[/i:dnc0f0r7]

He says that every year, but still: it's good to see it said.

And very good to see L. Mulligan Grocer in the guide this year.

Worth a listen. Padraig Cribben, CEO of the vintners federation is on too defending the "limited selection" of beers available in most pubs because "in the past the consumer has reacted negatively to new products because they like what they know and trust".

I have to say I found Padraig Cribben's attitude mildly irritating.

I don't think he'll find anyone disagreeing here!

A great, but short read.
