Thanks for asking for our input as to your possible beer selection decisions, that's cool.
There's alot of respect for the larger 75cl bottles of beer out there, especially those that are bottled conditioned. These beers age well and classics can be born with a little patience and careful storage.
Belgium seem to specialise in this approach and many examples are available. Amoung these are classics such as those beers from Brouwerij St. Bernard, the infamous ST. BERNARDUS ABT 12 and their kin. I'd love to see these beers available here in Ireland.
I'd love to see more 75cl bottles in bars and off licenses. Bigger bottles are more likely to be shared. They can be poured for friends, friends who may not have usually ask for a craft beer. Bigger bottles take the guess work out of a long list of unfamiliar beers for the uninitiated. My friends became fans of LaChouffe after I ordered a large bottle and poured them each a glass. No pressure to finish a whole pint or bottle, it's just a glass. Just enough to form an opinion.
I know that some folk don't like to come across as ignorant, and male beer drinkers are no exception. I believe some people don't like frequenting the likes of the B&C and the Porterhouse because that's how they feel when they go there. They don't know the beers and they don't want to ask. Call it pride, call it insecurity, call it what you will. Only the truely inner confident people will ask for advice or suggestion. If you are this person, good for you. But I know alot who are not. (There's a old stereotype that comes to mind about male drivers refusing to ask for directions when driving round in circles!!)
Bigger bottles are stylish accomplimants to a nice dinner, and the lady friend is more likely to have a wee glass from a bigger bottle than a small 33cl mouthful. So as not to "deprive" you of your precious Belgian sour red!! Because you've been talking about it all day long!! Because God Forbid if she decides it's not for her you'll feel let down and hurt that she "wasted" it!! Because, because.Humans...We're a fickle sort really....
ST. BERNARDUS ABT 12, I'll say no more.....thank you in advance.
