Martello Tower Sandymount - BrewPub 15 years 2 months ago #1

Just wondering if anyone on here knows the current ownership/status of the Martello Tower in Sandymount. It was developed in the mid to late nineties I think. The idea was to open it as a restaurant and brewpub. The planning permissions granted specifically provide for the bewing of beer for consumption on the premises. The whole enterprise seems to have degenerated into legal wranglings towards the end of the nineties and into the aughties. The last refence I can see is in this article:

After that the internet draws a blank.

It's hard to imagine that the dispute hasn't been resolved by now (for better or worse) and amazing to think that a prime asset like this has been allowed to lie idle for nearly 15 years. Reputedly it is fully equipped inside, a sort of a brewing Miss Havisham, full of bitterness and slowly decaying behind the huge metal shutters.

I suspect they just ran out of money. More in this thread[/url:3o39euy7].

I would love to claim that the reference was deliberate but pure coincidence.

But in the madness of the last 10 years in Ireland how could no one have have made an effort with this?

There was lots of easier money to be made. And if your only interest in beer is that your last name is Smithwick you're not likely to stick with it.

The money behind this was coming from one of the Doyle family so there were some deep pockets involved.

In any case some further research indicates that An Bord Planala overturned the Dublin Corpo approval:

Pity. Stupid ABP decisions means the only beach side restaurant in Dublin doomed to sit empty interminably.
