Has anyone been to Gothenburg drinking? any recommendations? I had a look at the european beer guide and there seem to be some swedish micros in operation, and one or two brewpubs, but if all else fails, are there at least any swedish beer recommendations so that I'm not all at sea in Systembolaget?

Ølfabrikken and Nils Oscar are the big micro brands to look out for. Ølfabrikken Porter is fantastic.

grainne and I were in Gothenburg about 5 years ago, turned into the most expensive weekend away we ever had but that's a long story for a pint someday. There was a nice pub underneath the Elite Plaza hotel called the Bishops Arms, which specialised in selling British ales to the Swedes, but I am pretty sure they'd have the local micro's too. Can't remember anywhere else specific I'm afraid...the locals were fun but pretty nuts!

yeah I read about the bishops arms, i think it's a chain of a couple of pubs around the city. I'm visiting a friend outside the city, so I'm not sure if I'll see much of it, it's more to know what to look for in the offie. THe whole business of state off licenses that close for much of the weekend makes stocking up on drink quite a complicated affair that calls for good planning, especially over NY when I expect them to be shut quite a lot.

Totally forgot to mention in last post - you probably already found the oceanbryggeriet in your searches. Once of the fellas there, Thomas, used to brew in Messrs Maguire with Cuilán so you if you get in touch and do a bit of name dropping, you might be able to get in for a visit.
