TOPIC:

The good and ad of beer experimentation 16 years 5 months ago #1

Just wanted to share a beer experience from last night. Pretty new to craft/speciality beers of late and so now have a habit of stopping in different off-licenses to see if they have anything interesting. Last night I picked up Fullers ESB (very nice), Bishops Finger (fantastic) and two bottles of Blue Moon.......

What attracted me to blue moon was the description of the beer as a traditional american craft beer, this was further enhanced by a blurb about 'were just some craft brewers making beer and having fun', imagine my surprise when I googled it and found this www.post-gazette.com/pg/06324/739907-34.stm
Could there be a bigger case of false advertising.

Now onto the beer itself. It is described as a unfiltered weissbier in the belgium style with Coriander and Orange, to be honest it tasted like the cheap fizzy orange you used to get as a kid. To be fair I think I must have got a dodgy bottle, as there was a lot of floating white debris in the glass. I dumped the bottle down the sink, I might be fair to them and see if the other bottle is any better, but what really got my goat was the way they portrayed the beer on the bottle.

Sounds about right for a witbier to me Maybe you just don't like the style - try another example and see if you like it any better. Hoegaarden or Vedett White or available in a lot of offies and St. Bernardus Wit shows up now and again in the better spots.

Hi Bigears, I have to say that I like the style and have had Hoegaarden on lots of occasions. In hindsight I think the bottle must have been bad as it tasted terrible.

Wait, where exactly did you get Blue Moon?

My wife would kill for some
We have not seen it in Ireland before.

It is a mediocre wit owned by Coors but its not a bad beer, just not a good example of a wit.

It's meant to taste like citrus flavoured disprin. It's not a style that I appreciate

Hi Saruman, I got it in the off-licence on the Navan Road, beside the Cabra Library (I think it's an O'Briens)
