Ely: craft beer fail 16 years 10 months ago #1

I was in the Ely HQ gastropub yesterday, to test whether it is actually a pub, since it has always seemed very restauranty to me. Anyway, they had no problem with me just buying a round of drinks at the bar and nothing else, so I was pleased with that.

However, they used to do O'Hara's on draught, and I saw recently that they'd switched to Porterhouse Plain. The stout taps were unmarked and when I asked what was in them I was told, with regret, that it was Guinness because that's what customers demanded and they reluctantly made the switch.

I'm guessing you could get into trouble with Diageo for serving Guinness from unmarked taps.

I'm taking all three Ely branches off the pub list -- but if anyone does happen to be in any of them (they are nice for food and wine) and does see Irish craft beer, let me know and I'll reinstate.

Yeah I was in there (CHQ) for the first time a few weeks back - was happy enough to go along, cos I had heard they did OHaras - but they had no OHaras tap. Saw one of the taps was PH Plain, but they 'had none'; assumed they were out of stock, cos I think it was around the same time as the PH craft beer festival was on.
Bloody customers, what the hell do they know?

Just tell them it's guinness...most won't know the difference at the time and may be pleasantly surprised In fact it might be a type of guerrilla warfare we could embark upon to convince folks they haven't a baldy what they are drinking most of the time and in fact they would be better off with a nice craft beer instead.

Though it occurs to me that while the bar may have been making noises about consumer demands, it's far more likely that Diageo gave them a wholesale price they couldn't refuse.

If so, that's a false economy from this former customer's point of view...

I guess money speaks alright. Although I would hope staff would suggest that instead of guinness we have this other stout from a brewery up the road thats really tasty but hand made.....yada yada as the boys in the b&c do . I've seen it work on tourists in there but not always.IT also shows the staff are knowledgeable and willing to offer advice and the owner is willing to support smaller enterprises . we live in hope
