The cost of a pint 17 years 1 month ago #1

We have 2 locals in Barna, Co Galway: The Twelve Hotel and Donnelly's.

We popped into The Twelve for me to have some Galway Hooker but was horrified when I was asked for €5.30. €5.30 a pint! A slightly unfair comparison but you'll get one of the finest pints of Guinness for €3.80 in Donnelly's. Hooker in Galway seems to average €4.20, expensive but not ridiculous.

Will be a long time before we venture into The Twelve I think.

The Twelve is a fancy Boutique hotel which will always charge more. I don't recall it being that expensive when I spent a few nights there last year. I was very surprised and glad to see it.

Was in Thomas Reids the other week and was charged 6.20 for a pint of Staropramen, is this the most expensive pint in the country?

Well, you see with the recession and the smoking ban and all there are fewer people going to the pubs. The natural response of a shrewd business man is to whine about it, blame the government and put up prices to gouge the customers left in the place, right?

I'm sure this is a cliche but what is the cost of a pint relative to what your dad or grandad paid[/url:3r5qtou2]?

It seems to be pretty standard. 140 ish pints per average wage. Given the increases in efficiency in growing the ingredients and brewing the beer this is a bit surprising. By this i mean many many people used to work in brewerys or used to work growing the ingredients. Now these people are not doing these jobs and instead machines are shouldn't the cost have gone down?

I remember hearing roughly a pints cost is 1/3 brewery, 1/3 tax, 1/3 pub. Is this true and has this ratio changed over the years?
